Saving the river, one bag of trash at a time

Molalla RiverWatch again tries to clean up river left littered by careless visitors

May 14, 2008

It’s been said of many things that it all starts with one person. The good thing with keeping the Molalla River clean, you don’t have to be that first person. You just have to help out.

Here’s your chance.

On Saturday, May 17, people who would like to volunteer some of their time to clean up litter and garbage left along the Molalla River can join up with others who want to do the same thing.

At 9 a.m. Molalla RiverWatch, a non-profit group formed to protect and enhance the river, will be assembling volunteers at Feyrer Park for the group’s annual spring cleanup.

Again this year, Molalla RiverWatch is participating in the SOLV “Down By the Riverside” Enhancement, Cleanup and Appreciation Day event.

Target areas will include the Molalla River Corridor and other public river access sites near Molalla.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for volunteers to meet new people, enjoy the beautiful Molalla River and feel good about helping to keep the Molalla River clean and beautiful for everyone to enjoy,” said Kay Patteson, Executive Director of Molalla RiverWatch.

Volunteers should dress appropriately for the ever-changing Pacific Northwest weather.

Sturdy boots and gloves are necessary. For those who don’t have gloves or forget to bring them, some will be provided by SOLV and the Oregon Lottery.

Participants can also earn community service credit for this event.

All this work will not come without a reward. Following the cleanup, a volunteer appreciation barbecue will be provided by Molalla RiverWatch back at Feyrer Park in the afternoon.

For more information or to pre-register your group, call Kay Patteson, 503-824-2195 or Zach Jarrett at BLM, 503-375-5610.

The local cleanup is sponsored by Molalla RiverWatch, Inc., the Bureau of Land Management, SOLV "Down By the Riverside", Metro, Clackamas County ‘Dumpstoppers” and Molalla Communications Company.
